I decided to take a trip to Perth over the weekend to meet up with some friends. Hope you guys enjoy this trip report!

It was a wet and gloomy morning at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport

My ride to Perth

Boarding began 20 minutes before departure time and I settled into seat 26F.

In the meantime, ground handlers were busy preparing the aircraft for departure

The flight took off from Runway 16 on time and the dark and gloomy weather became bight and sunny once we cleared the cloud cover

This Qantas Cityflyer service had a 100% load on economy

Seat pitch was a generous 31"

Breakfast was served about 30 minutes into flight with the selection being Sultana Bran or Scrambled Eggs. I choose the Scrambled eggs which came with a sausage, potato cake, sundried tomato, apple slices, and a muffin

With about 2 hours left in the flight I decided to catch up on some assignments from uni

We then proceeded over Western Australia, passing some of the largest mining areas of Australia

As we approached YPPH, the aerodrome was clearly visible thanks to the fine weather

A heavy right bank and we were on the glideslope for a Runway 03 approach

The landing was smooth with speedbrakes and reverse thrust applied

We touched down 30 minutes ahead of schedule thanks to the lack of regular headwind that usually affects this route according to the captain

Ground handlers were quick to service the aircraft to ensure a quick turnaround

After 3 days in Perth it was time to head back to Melbourne.

As this was an overnight flight and I did not get a window seat, I did not manage to capture many pictures on board. I was assigned seat 58F, the second last row on board one of Qantas' youngest aircraft, an Airbus A330-200 (Domestic config). The flight was about 75% full and supper was served on board with a choice of beef burgundy or stir fried chicken with rice. Both choices came with a dinner roll, Arnotts crackers and rich cheddar cheese. After supper, I slept through the entire journey till the captain signaled for landing.

Upon arrival in Melbourne, I managed to catch Yanayai Dreaming (sorry for the reflection!)

Melbourne Airport Annual Emergency Exercise 2008

On the 22nd of October 2008, I participated in the annual Melbourne Airport Emergency Exercise as a volunteer passenger.

Here are some chronological pictures of that event.

About 60 volunteers gathered in the International Terminal (T2) at 8.00 am for a briefing. We were given visitor Aviation Security Identification Cards (ASIC) before being divided into two groups, "passengers" and "meeters/greeters". This was done randomly and I was fortunate enough to be a "passenger". We were all given a card which states our fake "name" and role.

Once done with the safely and operational briefing, officials escorted us airside, past security to loading dock 1, where a bus was waiting to transport us to the mock-up aircraft at the end of Runway 27.

The aircraft was a scrap Fokker-28 and here are a few interior shots:

Once everyone was seated, smoke began to fill the cabin through vents on the side of the fuselage. Apparently the plane has "crash landed" and is now "on fire"

A few people started coughing and sneezing and it took only 30 seconds for the first emergency vehicles to respond to this "accident"

The aircraft was evacuated as four foam tenders from the ARFF (Aviation Rescue and Firefighting) services based in MEL sprayed foam down both sides of the aircraft.

It took another 5 minutes before local fire trucks from surrounding areas of Melbourne Airport started rolling into the accident scene.

This massive train of fire trucks was truly a sight to behold.

Firefighters then guided us across the field to the command post where paramedics assessed our condition and check for any injuries. Some of us were "injured" and needed treatment before being taken to hospital. The others were put on a bus to be transported back to the terminal. In the bus, Police officers gathered information from passengers to find out their name and age.

I took the opportunity to snap some photographs on the trip to the terminal. Sorry for the quality guys, used my mobile as cameras were not allowed and the slight drizzle which dirtied the windows of the bus did not help as well.

When the exercise was underway, one particular aircraft arrived from LAX...

Nancy-Bird Walton (VH-OQA), Qantas' first A380 just arrived from her long trip back from Los Angeles. The bus stopped right in front of her and we were patted down by security before being allowed into the terminal. The first people who greeted us were AQIS (Australian Quarantine and Inspection Services) personnel and the first thing they asked were "Sir, have you been to Africa or South America in the past 6 weeks" and "Do you have any plants or seeds on you". I was thinking, the last thing someone who just survived an air crash wants was to go through Australia's strict quarantine regulations. Details about passengers were then taken down by customs personnel and then we were made to wait in this holding lounge while the match details with our "meeters/greeters".

After about 45 minutes, my "given name" was called and I was told that my greeter was found and I was escorted to the departure lounge of Gate 9 to meet my greeter. Gate 9 was also the only A380-capable gate at Melbourne Airport. This enabled me to grab these shots:

After the "meet-up", we were then taken to loading dock 1 to board the bus again, this time for a special tour of Melbourne Airport's airside.

The tour took us around the airport through all 4 terminals and as we were heading to the MRO section, I spotted this:

9M-MRJ which arrived in the morning waiting to depart as MH148 to KUL. The reason why this aircraft is sitting on the taxiway is because Melbourne Airport is currently undergoing major expansion plans and aircraft have to be towed in and out of certain gates for embarkation and disembarkation. This happened to several other aircraft including:

we were then taken on a tour on Runway 27.

After exiting the runway, we were taken back to the terminal for a debrief and that marked the end of this very interesting experience.

This was my first live football match in Australia. Been to the MCG before for AFL matches but not soccer and definitely my first time seeing a star studded international side with the likes of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Javier Saviola and Gabriel Heinze. The Aussie side had a few big names in their ranks with captain Lucas Neill leading EPL players such as Mark Schwarzer, Josip Skoko and Melbourne Victory's very own Archie Thompson.

As for the match, it was nothing really spectacular but nonetheless a close encounter between two teams who made it to the 2006 World Cup. Brilliant saves from both keepers coupled with a combined 3 shots to the crossbar/post by both teams. The highlight of the match has to be Messi's surging runs and a brilliant one touch passing play by Argentina that led to Messi being brought down in the box minus a given penalty. All in all, it was still an entertaining match and being there soaking up the atmosphere sure beats watching a match on the telly.

Where do we go?

BOX HILL.

Ah yes... the well known Box Hill, just off the outskirts of Melbourne and 14 train stations away from the city. Why did we make this journey? We don't know.

Scouted around the city of Box Hill before deciding on going to this restaurant called Hills BBQ, only because it was the only restaurant that was packed.

Our order for the night (L-R): Roasted crispy skin pork, spicy chicken ribs, deep fried pig intestine and sweet and sour pork. Yes, a fine selection of meat and innards.

Overall, the food was not too bad but it was nothing to shout about either. Was it worth it making the trip all the way for this? Nope.

Yes, the title says it all.. The Verve on Swanston was really on fire.

Situation:

11.45pm: Smoke started to build up through the corridors of the building on each floor.

11.47pm: Wykeith called and asked why we aren't outside with everyone else.

11.50pm: After much contemplating, we decided to evacuate the building. Each of us took what we thought would be most important to us.

My evacuation items: Mobile phone, passport and wallet.

Marcus' evacuation items: Mobile phone, Canon Digital IXUS 75.

Ben's evacuation item: Mobile phone.

Aik Sin's evacuation items: Mobile phone, passport, air ticket back to KL (Based on the theory should our building blow up, he can get home right away)

Fortunately, that didn't happen and we were back in our apartment by 1am. Apparently someone threw a burning cigarette down the garbage chute which caused stuff in there to burn and smoke to shoot up the entire building. Nonetheless, nothing serious occurred and everything was back to normal.

Going beyond expectations...

The flight back... This is a whole chapter by itself with problems mounting up and down with MAS.. Lets just say, I got lucky.

It was a pretty slow moving Saturday but as the evening approached, things started getting pumped up and interesting. This was it... the thought of witnessing Axl live was beckoning.

6pm - Grabbed a quick dinner from KFC Melbourne Central with fellow concert goer Wykeith. We then caught a tram from Flinders St. to Melbourne Park, the location of the Rod Laver Arena and the venue of the concert.

7pm - Arrived at Rod Laver to see this huge sign saying "STRICTLY NO CAMERAS ALLOWED". Great. That meant Wykeith had to deposit his camera at the cloaking booth and no quality pictures of the concert. Security was pretty tight, with quite a number of guards and metal detectors and all that...

After going through all the security and the barcode turnstalls, we then went to our seats and the sight inside the stadium at that time was rather empty...

Well, we were rather early so there it was.. waiting time!

9pm - The first opening act came onstage, this band called Rose Tattoo.. The lead singer had a powerful voice but was really random at times with his speeches but overall the band was more of a classical rock genre similar to Deep Purple.

10.30pm - The second opening act, Sebastian Bach came onstage to a rousing welcome. This dude was a real entertainer and had been touring with Gn'R for some time. Great band.

11.30 ish - After Sebastian Bach, the lights came back on and the crowd had grew to full capacity.

A bunch of people from the right sides of the stands initiated a Mexican wave and it was quite cool.. It went on for a few rounds until everyone got tired of it. As I was looking around scanning the crowd, a group of people in the row in the front-right of me moved into their seats. I caught a glance and was like "wait.. isn't that.. IT IS!" Toby Rand and Juke Kartel were a few seats away from me!

Thats Toby right there, for those of you who can recognise him...

11.30pm - The lights went off and everyone started screaming.. Then spotlights started shining randomly...

The opening song was expected. The intro to Welcome to the Jungle rang out a few times before coming to a pause, to build up anxiety.. And then Robin played the entire intro and lights came on stage and the crowd was greeted with an Axl trademark

The band played most of their classics including Mr Brownstone, Its So Easy, Live and Let Die, Knocking on Heaven's Door, Patience, an instrumental version of Don't Cry which was awesome and their most famous hit, Sweet Child of Mine...

A grand piano was then brought out and the crowd already knew which song was coming...

Ah.. the sounds of November Rain with a shower of sparks..

The band also played some of their new stuff including Chinese Democracy and Madagascar.

Nightrain was the "last song" of the night which I think Axl nailed. His vocals were still strong and powerful and believe me, those who think he sucks cause he's old, you guys are wrong.. He still has it!

The band went off stage for awhile before coming back to perform the traditional encore Paradise City which ended superbly with fireworks and raining confetti all over the arena.

And that was it! An absolutely spectacular concert! Arguably the best concert I've been to! It was a magnificent night but I can't help but wonder... G n' R are this good out of their prime, which leaves me thinking.. how much better would they be with Slash, Duff and Sorum.. Unfortunately thats not going to happen so I'll just leave my thoughts and enjoy the moment..

So there was a blackout in my house last night. Apparently due to the thunderstorm which blanketed the whole of KL. The blackout happened around 5pm when i was in Laundry for a special movie screening to watch "There's Only One Jimmy Grimble".

The movie was not bad.. The lead actor kinda looked like Wayne Rooney when he was a boy. This actually suited the movie's theme which was about football. However, there was that one thing that disappointed me. That kid should've been a United fan instead of supporting the blue half of Manchester.

Anyways, headed home after the movie. I even managed to avoid a massive jam and made it home only to find out that there is no electricity. Only a few houses are affected on my road due to a blown circuit due to the lightning. By now it was around 6pm. So my family and I waited.. 7pm.. and waited.. 8pm.. By now the entire house was pitch black:

we continued to wait.. 9pm.. and wait.. 10pm.. and wait.. 11pm... until finally some TNB technicians arrived.

We talked to the supervisor and he said the whole power supply to the entire road has to be cut to ensure the safety of the technicians that are gonna fix the problem.

Great. Now the whole street is pitch black. People started coming out of their houses and there were a few shouts thrown towards the technicians. Nonetheless, they've managed to fix the problem by midnight and restored power back to all the houses.

Full credit to the technicians for fixing the problem. Bollocks to TNB for their efficiency.

Hello.. Yes I know I know, its been awhile..

Helped my friend Raymond Yip to move furniture such as wardrobes, shelves and chairs from his previous home in Palm Springs, Sunway Damansara to his new home in Aman Suria. There are many things to learn from shifting from one apartment to another and I for sure acquired some valuble lessons:

When shifting from one home to another, make sure you
1. pack and have everything readied
2. have trolleys around to ease moving huge objects
3. have vehicles that are capable of carrying huge loads
4. hire someone to do the moving for you

Either that or,
1. don't shift homes
2. buy all new furniture and fittings

Anyway, its been a good experience and hope you enjoy your new home Raymond!

Its been a good day for these 2 lads:

Solskjaer and Man Utd for putting 2 goals past newcastle to put the devils back on top and Schumi for making it all square at 116 pts between himself and Fernando in a classic Shanghai Grand Prix

Another special occasion occured to a very special Isaac Tan whose birthday happens to fall on this date (2/10/06). Went to the curve to celebrate and lotsa wild things happened. This includes him standing on a chair. I'll leave it at that...

Met up with Ryan and Fye after college. Headed to OU where we kinda didn't know what to do.. Met Ting there as well.. We ended up (well Ryan ended up actually) trying the batting cages thingy which was quite cool.
At night, went out with Ryan and Loong. Stopped by Allen's place without him knowing and kinda caught him *offguard* We then headed to PJ to pick up Fye from her 2 1/2 hours add math tuition. Ryan and I would surely have died if we were attending.. Her tuition was supposed to end at 10.30pm but she got out at around 10.45pm. During the "waiting period", we used Ryan's car's boot as a chair. It was during this period as well where we saw strange things such as talking dogs, runaway cats and erratic mosquitos...

Last night, some dude rang the doorbell of my house and identified himself as a TMnet personel, claiming to do a survey on streamyx. Usually I would greet him at the gate and get the survey done on the spot. However, in a very rare occasion, my dad invited the dude INTO the house.. right... I was halfway watching Macca, Paul, Jamie and Shebs arguing when my dad asked me to talk to that dude.. it went well, something like this:

dude: Hello, sorry to disturb you. My name is (I forgot his name).
me : Hi, have a seat
dude: I'm gonna ask a few questions about your internet connection ok?
me : Go ahead
dude: Alright, first of all, are you using TMnet streamyx?
me : Yeah, of course
dude: Ah thats good. Which package are you using?
me : umm... Package 99.. the 1Mbps one..
dude: Ah thats brilliant. Do you have any problems or complaints?
me : uhh..
dude: Maybe about the speed or stability?
me : ah right... the speed is rather.. slow.. I mean like its stated 1mbps but I dont get that speed
dude: okay, using the speedometer, what speed did you get?
me : (I never actually checked, so I just gave some random number) about 400kbps I think..
dude: okay thats slow..
me : Tell me about it
dude: hehe. do you have any other complaints like disconnection etc?
me : Initially yeah but I think its quite stable now..
dude: Alright, thats it. Thanks alot for your time..
me : Sure thing.. Goodnight..

To my surprise, that dude was quite polite and friendly. My previous encounters didn't speak English at all! Anyhow, I did the speed test and my initial random number was quite off:

This morning, I woke up, showered and decided to check up on the news on the net for awhile..

My initial thoughts were about Thira and her family but she told me that everything's normal and as usual.. She even went to the movies! So I guess its alright...

ahh! finally after a few mishaps, I think it is safe to say that this blog is starting to pick up some pace. All I can say is this blog isn't gonna be a one-off thing.. It will last! hahah..

Anyways, was at Akar Karya (jamming studio in Uptown) tonight, fantastic place to play music with some ex-schoolmates from BB.. cool bananas.. Jammed stuff from GnR, Radiohead, Nirvana, The Killers, Billy Idol, Velvet Revolver, RHCP, INXS, Metallica and even Beyond and LMF.....

In other news, Apple has released a new batch of iPod's:

Looks like a chopped up version of the nano without the screen.. Nonetheless, I think it looks better than the previous shuffle..

A new facelift that looks rather similar to the old mini, with the curves and all..

Not much of a difference but Apple claims that the lcd screen is 60% brighter.. Not bad at all...

Hahah.. my first post is starting to seem like a mini review...
